Kingston, NY -- 3/9/2010 — One lucky family will soon have the opportunity to purchase a brand new home in the City of Kingston thanks to the efforts of the Ulster County BOCES YouthBuild program. The two-story, three-bedroom home on Prospect St. in the city was built from the foundation up by young people re-building their community. All interested buyers have until April 1, 2010 to apply.
A grand opening celebration on March 15 featuring Congressman Maurice Hinchey and Kingston Mayor James Sottile will officially kick off the effort to choose the family who will buy the home. Rural Ulster Preservation Company, a partner with YouthBuild on a number of projects, will help interested families apply and a lottery from all of the qualified buyers will determine the ultimate purchaser of the home.
Located at 136 Prospect Street, the home features off-street parking and includes brand new Energy Star appliances (stove, refrigerator and dishwasher) a full, unfinished basement, and 1 ½ bathrooms. It will be open for viewing at the 11:00 AM celebration on March 15, when the work of the area students who re-built the home will be showcased.
The construction team used up-to-date green industry techniques and materials and bears a post-subsidy sale price of $113,000. If purchasers are first-time homebuyers, they may be eligible for at least $8,000 tax credit rebates from a program that expires at the end of April. Ultimately, the home will be sold to a family earning up to 80% of the area median income. RUPCO will screen the family not only for income eligibility, but to help insure that the home is affordable and sustainable for them.
Anyone interested in purchasing the home should act quickly. After March 15, people can view the home and get more information on the YouthBuild program by contacting Bonnie Landi at 331-2381. Applications to purchase the home are available by calling Michael Berti at RUPCO at 331-9860 or visiting the YouthBuild office at the Business Resource Center (room 201), 1 Development Court, Kingston. Applications must be returned to RUPCO no later than April 1 and a random selection process on or about April 9 will determine the future homeowner.
