| In December of 2002, the Kirkland Hotel Building received federal historic designation, putting the building on the National Register of Historic Places. This listing will potentially allow the project to qualify for historic tax credits as a matter of right, and possible state matching funds to assist in meeting the projected budget.
The Kirkland Hotel Building recently received state historic landmark designation as one of the few remaining original wooden hotel structures in the region. Based on the wide public sentiment to preserve this important historical and cultural icon of the Kingston Uptown social environment, RUPCO has established the Save the Kirkland Fund, and has undertaken the task of its restoration as a part of its mission of community revitalization. The fund will potentially bridge a current $500,000 gap in funding for the proposed $2.6 million project.
At this time, RUPCOs proposed renovation will include approximately 14,125 sq. ft. of commercial tenant space on the first and second floors of the structure, with several tenants having already expressed intent to lease parts the finished space. The former Dutch Rathskeller Restaurant space, which occupied the basement area of the building, is as yet unplanned.
RUPCO is a not-for-profit organization providing an array of services for low and moderate income households in Ulster County. Service include rental assistance, home repair programs, home buyers programs and development of new housing for the elderly, families and those with special needs. As evidenced by its previous award-winning restoration of the Stuyvesant Hotel Building in Kingston, Mayor Sottile feels that RUPCO is clearly the competent developer to see this project to completion.
Interested donors may contact RUPCO at (845) 331-2140. Donations may also be mailed to Rural Ulster Preservation Company, 289 Fair Street, Kingston, NY 12401.
